ABOUT THE SCIENTIFIC NAME PRONUNCIATION DICTIONARY:

Many students of birds who are not familiar with Latin find the pronunciation of bird scientific names difficult. The IOU thought it would be useful to produce a dictionary of sound files aimed to provide some guidelines on how to pronounce scientific bird names, to help improve oral presentations and communications. The bird names included in this dictionary are from IOC World Bird List, Clements Checklist of the Birds of the World, and HBW/BirdLife Checklist as of Aug 30, 2017.

NOTES ON PRONUNCIATION:

Please note that there is no standard or uniform way of pronouncing scientific names, for example, whether 'c' is pronounced as 'k' in cat or as 's' in cell. Some people might say that scientific names should be pronounced as in the ancient Latin, as the Romans would have said those words, had they existed then. But most of the words did not exist in Roman times, especially those that are named after a person or a country. In addition, some scientific names begin with silent letters, mostly some of the names beginning with the letter ā€œpā€. For example, the word Pterodroma is pronounced 'terodroma', and Psittacus is pronounced 'sittacus'. In this dictionary, I have spoken all the scientific names as though they were English, but in many cases, more than one pronunciation is still acceptable.
